Hello, my name is Meg Tilton and I am a certified Life Coach, member of the LDS Church, and mother to five crazy kiddos.
I cannot begin to tell you the deep yearning desire I had to become a mom ever since I was little. I was raised by amazing parents and my mom was such a great example of what a loving and nurturing mother should be. I had a deep and trusting testimony of what my local and general leaders in the church were telling me when it came to my divine role as a mother. I knew that’s what I wanted it to be. I knew it’s what Heavenly Father wanted me to be.
So you can imagine my delight when in May of 2003, my husband and I welcomed our first child into this world. The life of unending joy I had been taught would come with motherhood was literally at my fingertips. After the excitement of having a new baby settled down, after my family went home, and after my husband went back to work, there I sat with the baby. She was adorable and SO good, but I was not feeling the bliss of motherhood that my YW leaders had promised me. To be quite honest, I was miserable.
That miserable feeling would ebb and flow over the next 10 years as we added more kids to our family. I searched high and low for what I was doing wrong. What had I missed? Then one day, I came across the answer. I was floored! Why hadn’t anyone told me this before? Why had I suffered for so long?
Have you felt this way too? Have you felt trapped and suffocated by motherhood? Have you been searching for how to escape but have been too embarrassed to admit what you are really feeling and get the help you need? I’m here to tell you that you can stop feeling embarrassed and know that you are not the only one to have felt this way. There is a way for you to love your motherhood again.
I grew up having stories read to me at night before I went to bed. I loved having the words on the page come to life as they painted an amazing picture in my mind of characters and adventures in far and exotic lands. I would have my parents read a few select books over and over and over again because I loved them so much. Now that I’m a mom I find the same is true for my kids. They find a few books they really like and they ask me to read them over and over and over again. The funny thing is that we have shelves and shelves of books, but they pick the same few everytime.
If you are feeling trapped in your motherhood I can almost guarantee it’s because you are reading the same stories of what your motherhood should be – stories that aren’t your. They may be the stories of your mother’s, your grandmother’s, and best friend’s motherhood, but not yours.
Telling yourself the wrong motherhood story is easy to do in today’s day and age. There are so many stories to get your hands on that it gets hard to distinguish between what is meant to be your story and what is really someone else’s. For example, if you are anything like I was, you have been borrowing pages from your friend Suzie as you scroll through her Facebook page on how to throw a birthday party for your one year old. Or perhaps a page or two from your cousin Mary on the proper way to deal with a sassy teenager. Even better, you have been stealing pages from your own mother’s book on how to keep up a house and be a good homemaker. Those stories and pages of your friends and family are amazing and they are doing so much good in their families lives, but they aren’t your pages. When you borrow someone else’s pages, you start to feel suffocated and fake. You start to question everything you are doing and begin to shut down instead of come alive.
Do you want to thrive in your motherhood? Do you want to wake up excited for each new day and go to bed grateful and feeling fulfilled? It’s time to write YOUR motherhood story.
Have you ever seen the movie “Beauty and the Beast”? Do you remember when the Beast finally lets Bell into the library? She can hardly contain her excitement because there are so many books. So many stories. So many possibilities.
By now I’m sure you know you need to rewrite your story, you want to rewrite it, but how? This is where I come in. I am a certified life coach who specializes in helping moms rewrite their motherhood stories so they can have the motherhood they always dreamed of – their unique, amazing, and beautiful individualized motherhood.
